A Vigilant Eye Saves Life

This is the story of a young man, Satyaban, 37 years of age, security guard by profession, and a father of 3 children. His meager salary supports 7 members (parents, children, wife, and himself). He was under treatment of an ENT doctor for some throat infection, and was referred to MAX – ICanCaRe TOBACCO CESSATION AND ORAL SCREENING Centre at MAX Vaishali for his tobacco addiction.

Satyaban was seen by Dr. Harshita Pandey, BDS, and the Certified Tobacco Cessation Specialist at MAX-ICanCaRe Tobacco Cessation and Oral Screening Centre. The intervention process started as per the ABCD digitalized protocol of Tobacco Cessation on the ICanCaRe APP.

Satyaban had started tobacco after he got the job of security guard 7years back persuaded by one of his senior colleagues. He was counseled and medications for tobacco cessation were prescribed.

As a part of “C” of ABCD of tobacco cessation when his oral Screening was done, there it was!! A small verrucous lesion 5 x 2 mm on the inner side of his lip. A potential malignant lesion (likely to be premalignant at present). If not take care of at the early stages it would be a disaster with an aggressive tumor later on.

Mouth opening reduced to 2.3 cm on the TrisCaRe just 2.5 fingers and extensive staining and unhygienic teeth which also requires attention.
A simple excision was done of the lesion, oral prophylaxis and tobacco cessation intervention were performed. All this in a few hundred rupees, A life is saved and sure family would be happy!

Thanks to the ENT surgeon who referred the patient to the MAX-ICanCaRe TCC and Oral Screening center and more importantly to the VIGILANT EYE of Dr. Harshita Pandey.

On occasion of World Cancer Day, we proudly announce the inauguration of our very first Tobacco Wellness Centre in collaboration with Noida Medicare Centre (NMC), at 16C, Block E, Sector 30, Noida under the guidance of our expert Dr. Pawan Gupta and dedicated team of doctors at NMC headed by Dr. Vaishnav and Dr. Keshav Nathani.

The ‘Unmet Needs’ of cancer survivors include medical, psychological, social, spiritual, financial and informational needs. Follow up of a cancer survivor/warrior/fighter/ – to make them a winner we must provide,

    1. Constant assurance by regular check-ups that the disease is under control, once a person has suffered from cancer.
    1. Physical rehabilitation a very important but often neglected. The patient is unaware and the treating oncologist unconcerned about this aspect. So this is best done by an occupational therapist. Patient undergoes various bodily challenges surgery (one or more organs might have been removed), radiotherapy (causing fibrosis, stiffness, dryness, etc.), Chemotherapy (hair loss, mucositis, etc.). The patient needs physical rehabilitation on all these account.
    1. In spite of everything going fine the patient remains in constant fear. Fear of death, fear of recurrence. A cancer survivor is in constant negative stress. A patient cannot win until unless his mind is taken care.
    1. Spiritual rehabilitation is necessary to change the attitude of the patient.
    1. Financial rehabilitation – One of the major areas of concern for stress is the financial loss that a family goes through during and also beyond the treatment. The financial loss can be because of – high cost of treatment, loss of job, constant travel, unfit for the job, regular absenteeism. Whatever be the cause, these patients require a regular financial help. Some may require a regular income source; some may like addition to their income.
